Every year, new trends rise to the forefront while others fade into the background. While this is common with fashion and home trends, it's also true for food and grocery shopping. To help consumers navigate the food trends expected to emerge in 2025, Instacart released its Flavorful Food Forecast, a list of anticipated food and grocery trends for the coming year. To curate these trends, Instacart analyzed purchase data from 2024 to find what items people are adding to their carts. Here, we're highlighting seven key trends from the report.

Prebiotic and Probiotic Drinks

Instacart predicts that consumers will be on the hunt for innovative beverages in 2025, given that purchases for prebiotic and probiotic drinks surged throughout 2024. Per the report, this category has grown by 58 percent over the past year.

Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Non-alcoholic beers, wines, and spirits will continue to be desirable among consumers in the coming year. Per Instacart, this is especially true for Gen Z and Millennials. "Our data shows that the share of orders containing canned non-alcoholic cocktails (up 404 percent), non-alcoholic spirits (up 129 percent), non-alcoholic wines (up 28 percent), and non-alcoholic beers (up 17 percent) have all increased over the past year," the report states.

Protein-Packed Foods

Protein-packed foods are getting the attention they deserve, which won't change in 2025. "As a result, cottage cheese is re-emerging as a beloved food item with a 17 percent increase in the share of purchases in 2024, thanks to its protein-rich benefits," the trend forecast states.

Tinned Fish

More people are expanding their tinned fish preferences in the coming year. Per Instacart's report, purchases for canned mackerel and sardines have surged by 74 and 13 percent respectively during 2024.

Electrolyte Drink Powders

Shoppers are looking for creative ways to stay hydrated, and they're turning to options with electrolytes. Instacart has seen a 36 percent increase in orders for electrolyte drink powders in the past year.

Baking From Scratch

Instacart's data reveals that more shoppers are interested in baking bread from scratch. Over the past year, the company has seen a 49 percent increase in the share of bread flour orders and a 17 percent uptick in wheat berry purchases.

Foods From Around the World

The report notes that shoppers will continue to buy foods from around the world in 2025. According to the data, there's been an increase in consumers adding milk tea (up 75 percent), kimchi (up 8 percent), and frozen Asian buns (up 93 percent) to their carts.
