10 Food and Drink Trends to Try in 2025, According to Whole Foods

Panning meals for you and your family can be a fun way to explore new food variations and try popular dishes. To help shoppers understand what food trends will be stocking grocery store shelves in the next calendar year, Whole Foods unveiled its annual food trend forecast for 2025.

The list was compiled by the company's trends council, which consists of more than 50 Whole Foods team members—from foragers and buyers to culinary experts. With their deep industry experience, the council was able to curate a list that reflects growing consumer preferences.

Last year, Whole Foods predicted that women's health, little luxuries, and complex heat would be popular. In 2025, the food retailer forecasts that grocery carts will be filled with snacks from around the world, tea, sourdough, and more.

Snacks From Around the Globe

Flavors from all around the world are expected to be a major food trend in 2025, according to Whole Foods. From chamoy candy to mango sticky rice chips and chili crunch oil edamame, snacks from around the globe will entice consumers to try something new in the coming year. 

Dumplings

Dumplings are delicious dough pockets stuffed with a savory filling. They've been popular in many cultures for centuries, but shoppers should expect to see them in abundance on grocery store shelves in 2025.

Crunchy Foods

Sometimes a good crunch is needed to elevate a dish. According to Whole Foods, crispy grains, granola, sprouted and fermented nuts, and roasted chickpeas are just some of the crunchy foods that will occupy shelves in 2025. The company says more and more consumers are reaching for these items to add texture to their meals.

Hydration

Thanks to reusable water bottles, people are sipping on water more and more. However, consumers are eager to get more from their H20. They're adding electrolytes and drinking chlorophyll water and even protein water. Because of this, Whole Foods predicts items like cactus water, organic raw coconut water, and sports drinks made without artificial sugar and colors will be more popular in the coming year. 

Teas

Tea is a staple in many homes. But new steeping formats, like tea trips, cold-brew bags, etc., have given new life to this timeless beverage. Whole Foods also reports that new types of tea-based drinks will hit shelves, including plant-based milk teas and sparkling teas. 

Compostable Packaging

Compostable packaging will continue to be a trend in 2025. If brands aren't ditching packaging completely, they're going the compostable route, according to Whole Foods. From compostable produce stickers to home-compostable products, brands are aiming to reduce their environmental impact one step at a time.

Sustainable Sips

Sustainability is in, and boozy brands are working to reduce their environmental footprint by embracing regenerative practices. Some beer and whiskey brands are using ingredients like drought-resistant fonio or regeneratively farmed kernza as a more forward-thinking way to formulate their products.

Sourdough

The sourdough hype isn't slowing down anytime soon. Whole Foods predicts that ways to use sourdough will flood grocery stores in 2025. From pizza crusts, flatbreads, brownies, crackers, and so much more, sourdough will continue to be a big hit next year. 

Plant-Based Aquatic Ingredients

With the continued popularity of seaweed, Whole Foods predicts there will be an increased interest in harvesting readily available aquatic plants, like sea moss, in the coming calendar year. 

Protein

Consumers are looking to incorporate more protein into their diet that goes beyond powders and bars. Recipes incorporating cottage cheese are increasing in popularity. Additionally, organ meats (livers, hearts, brains, etc.) are being touted as a way to increase protein, vitamin, and mineral consumption, according to Whole Foods.
