With the new year right around the corner, it's the perfect time to start thinking about emerging home décor trends. Whether you want to revamp your living room or spruce up your bedroom, Zillow unveiled its 2025 home trend report to help you navigate your design choices. According to the real estate platform, homeowners will blend the latest technology with nostalgic, old-world charm to create a comfortable, sustainable, and climate-resilient home.

"Technology has enabled homeowners to live more sustainably and more affordably, which is a growing priority for prospective buyers," said Amanda Pendleton, home trends expert for Zillow. "Energy-efficient and climate-resilient home features are quickly gaining popularity as homeowners look to keep costs down, including insurance costs. At the same time, a home is not just a checklist of practical features, it's a feeling. Homeowners and buyers today are looking to the past to create a sense of warmth, character, and comfort in even the most high-tech environments."

To create this report, Zillow looked at hundreds of home features and design styles mentioned in for-sale listings during 2024. The company then identified the keywords that showed up more frequently than a year ago. Using this data, Zillow identified the following emerging trends.

Electric Features

Zillow says that mentions of whole-home batteries have increased by 62 percent since last year, making this the fastest-growing feature in its analysis this year. Whole-home batteries act as a generator during a power outage or when the sun isn't shining.

Additionally, electric vehicle (EV) chargers appear in 34 percent more listings on the platform today than a year ago. And as terms like "sustainable" and "green" increase in popularity, interest in solar panels has surged by 18 percent on Zillow. Electric ranges and induction cooktops are always among the trending keywords.

Cozy Vibes

Listings that have mentioned the word "cozy" have increased by 35 percent since last year as homeowners are embracing smaller and cozier spaces. For a while, a big, open floor plan was what buyers were looking for, but now they're interested in more intimate spaces. "The great room has been replaced by smaller, cozier, color-saturated rooms that serve a specific purpose, such as dens and dining rooms," the report says.

Old-World

The old-world style is making a comeback as nostalgia continues to trend. The keyword appeared in 14 percent more listings than in 2023 and mentions of the word "vintage" increased by nine percent. Biophilic décor and home libraries are also on the rise, appearing 22 percent more frequently on Zillow's listings.

The Victorian-era scullery is also something homeowners are becoming interested in. "This second kitchen, or back kitchen, where entertainers can hide the dirty work of meal prep and cleanup, is appearing in 8 percent more listings today than a year ago," the report says.

Climate Resiliency

A huge selling point for buyers is homes that offer protection from climate-related disasters. Zillow found that 86 percent of recent home buyers say it's important for their prospective home to have at least one climate-resilient feature, such as seismic retrofitting, water catchment systems, and drought-resistant turf yards.

Spa-Inspired Wet Rooms

A spa-inspired wet room is becoming increasingly popular amongst home buyers, as more people prioritize spaces that promote their physical and mental well-being. "A wet room combines the shower and bathtub into one waterproof space without the usual shower curb or enclosure," the report says. "Wet rooms are being featured 19 percent more often in listings on Zillow."
