While there have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consuming these products, listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, in young children, and in elderly people. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the FDA.
