Here's How Martha and Snoop's Friendship Really Began

We rarely pass up a chance to see Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg appear together on television, which is why our ears perked up when we heard our founder and her longtime pal were appearing on NBC's Today show this week. In advance of Martha and Snoop's newest season of Potluck Dinner Party, which premieres tomorrow night on VH1, the pair sat down for an interview and shared the story of how their wild friendship began.

Believe it or not, Martha and Snoop's friendship emerged out of a bowl of mashed potatoes: Martha first invited Snoop onto The Martha Stewart Show back in 2008, and the two connected over a creamy bowl of spuds and a few vocabulary words that Martha had yet to learn (Snoop's signature "foshizzle" chiefly among them). "What a weird couple we were," Martha says, recounting the story for NBC's Harry Smith. "Martha kind of, like, pioneered this," Snoop told Smith. "As far as letting rappers become a part of daytime television." (Here, Martha chimes in: "They were too odd," she says sarcastically.) "Yeah, we were odd," Snoop admitted. "But we fit right in. You know, cooking with Martha just seemed like the right space to be in."

The two ended up being distant admirers of each other for many years-Snoop came back to the Martha show to make brownies, and Martha even shared on Reddit that she wished that she was "better" friends with Snoop in 2014. Then, the pair reconnected at a Comedy Central roast in 2015 to make good fun of none other than recording artist Justin Bieber.

"She sat next to me, and she stole the show," Snoop tells NBC. "She was the funniest 'roaster' that night. In that moment, I knew I wanted to be alongside this lady for the rest of my life." It didn't take too long for Martha and Snoop to get started on what would become Potluck Dinner Party, either. "I originally said, 'If Snoop will do it, I'll do it,'" Martha said. Potluck Dinner Party ended up being one of the most well-received shows on VH1 in 2016. This season-which is the show's third, and features a special format where celebrities and other A-list guest stars will face cooking challenges alongside Martha and Snoop-currently has a perfect rating score on Rotten Tomatoes, NBC reports.

"This show shows you that people can get along, people can work together, people can love each other, no matter where they come from, or how they were brought up," Snoop said.

Regardless of their show and working together, it seems that Martha and Snoop's friendship is only going to grow in the future. "I like his laid-back energy-I like his outspokenness, I like his sense of timing, and I really enjoy to watch him cook," Martha said. "He's so particular, his little tiny bits of this and that, and it all finally comes together." As for Snoop? Martha seems to be more than just a good friend. "I love Martha-like, I love her for real," he said. "She's the big sister I never had. Being able to correct me, to teach me, to show me how to be better, to give me something to aspire to be."
