They say one person's trash is another one's treasure, but thrift shop finds are anything but trash. Scouring the racks and shelves for vintage finds has become increasingly popular as more people are searching for sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to buying new. Not to mention, there are certainly some hidden gems concealed amongst the masses that may seem like they were meant just for you. From quirky furniture to rare art and designer staples, all it takes is a little bit of patience to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Ahead, we asked experts to share some of their favorite treasures to shop for at thrift stores—remember these items the next time you head out for a secondhand shopping spree.

Fine China, Linens, and Glassware

While cups and bowls may actually be one of the first things that come to mind when you think of thrifting, many people don’t think of creating a full tablescape from beautifully thrifted plates, linens, and fine chinaware. Whether the pieces match perfectly or their individual facets complement each other, you can assemble a lovely table without breaking the bank. "Setting a table with eclectic mixes instantly gives a vintage feel that makes a statement," says Libby Palmieri, founder of House of L Designs. "Pattern and color play offer a feel that can far surpass the endless sameness that comes with retail purchases."

What may not work in one person's closet anymore may be another person’s dream. "There is nothing like the feeling of finding the perfect 100 percent wool, mock neck sweater that's been made in England for $8—which just happened the other week," says Shannon Wissler, co-founder of Ella Jane Vintage. "Or the softest silk button-up with absolutely no blemishes for $6.99. But there is a patience to this style of thrifting. You can spend two hours in the thrift store and walk out with two or three things, and I'm OK with that. The most unexpected thing I find at the thrift store (at least currently) is the excellent quality pieces that are still in perfect condition.”

Home Appliances

Need a new blender? Try heading over to your local secondhand shop before buying new. Most of these pieces, like mixers, toasters, and blenders, are still in great condition. As people update their kitchens, they will probably opt for newer appliance models, kicking the old ones to the curb. Since most appliances can’t go in your general recycling bin, certain companies will take the parts to repurpose—or they end up at a thrift store just waiting for a new home. If you can, plug it in to make sure it works before bringing it to the register.

Unique Storage Containers

For all the DIYers, a secondhand store is a quintessential spot for scouting out objects for your next project. "Finding any type of container at a thrift store is a perfect way to bring vintage charm to a room," says Katie Agron of Wolfe Design House. "You can repurpose old tin cans for pencil holders or vases, wood crates for magazine piles, or assorted dishes to hold keys and remotes. These charming pieces become instant conversation starters and bring a curated look to a space." You never know when you might stumble across a mint-condition, vintage suitcase or an old steamer trunk that has the potential to fit into your space like it always belonged there.

There are truckloads of wonderful stories lining the shelves of thrift stores just waiting to be read. From new bestsellers that someone discarded after reading once to rare, first-edition collections and pre-loved coffee table books, there is certainly no shortage of great finds. Plus, you’ll take them home for a fraction of the cost.

Your next conversation piece could be waiting at your local thrift shop. While there are plenty of stories of thrifters finding valuable paintings or ceramics that end up being worth a small fortune, there are also so many unique pieces that you will want to keep for yourself. "Thrifting can be so rewarding," says Palmieri. "A literal hunt for lost treasures. The right store in the right spot can be an endless source of finding pieces for a home."

Whether searching for lighting, vases, decorations, or just about anything else, you can almost always find what you need at secondhand shops—and usually with much more personality than a purchase from a big box store. Next time you want something new, head to the thrift store instead and find something with vintage character. "From the inexpensive little tchotchke to a true collectible, the thrill of the discovery is satisfying and takes the generic gloss of the predictable accessories that can diminish one's overall décor," says Palmieri. "With a brush of luck and a good eye, most thrift stores don't disappoint."
