Green onions add flavor and color to many dishes such as stir-fries, potato salad, and in spreads or dips. If you have the vegetable in your refrigerator, you may want to check the label—green onions have been recalled in states across the U.S. due to potential salmonella contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On October 18, Church Brothers, LLC voluntarily recalled 1,271 cases of green onions because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The affected produce was distributed to retail locations and food service customers in Canada and 11 states, including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Per the FDA, the following items are included in the recall:

  • Church Brothers: Green Onions Iceless 4x2lb Reg Church Brothers Mexico; lot code CB272378; sold in a clear bag with product code printed on the front.
  • Trader Joe's: Green Onion Iceless 24x6oz Reg Trader Joe’s Mexico, lot code CB272378; pack date 092524; sold in a brand retail bag with pack date label on the back of the bag.
  • Imperial Fresh: Green Onion Iceless 4x2lb Reg; lot code CB272378; sold in a clear bag with product code located on the front of the bag.

The recall was initiated following a single product sample collected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which found the presence of salmonella. When consumed, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Symptoms of salmonella infection typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, per the FDA.

If you have the recalled product in your house, the FDA encourages you to throw it out immediately. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Church Brothers Farms' consumer hotline at 1-877-590-0428 or via email at consumerinfo@churchbrothers.com.
