There's nothing better than enjoying a nice piece of fudge for dessert. If you have some stashed away in your pantry you'll want to check the label—chocolate fudge products sold nationwide have been recalled due to potential mold growth contamination, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

The recall was initiated by Authentik Fudge of Sainte-Julie, Quebec, Canada, and includes 840 units of the Montreal Fudge brand Chocolate Fudge with Nuts. The issue was discovered after a consumer complained of finding mold pieces inside their box of fudge. Following the complaint, the FDA found additional fudge products with beginning signs of mold.

The product is packaged in 5.6-ounce containers. It's marked with the lot number 0241500805, 0241690105, or 0241690205 and expiration date of 2025/MR/01, 2025/MR/17, or 2025/MR/17 on the back of the box. The recalled fudge was distributed on May 19, 2024 and May 20, 2024, through Marshalls and sold in the retail chains in the following states:

  • TJ Maxx: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
  • Marshalls: California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Mold can present in various ways: Gray and furry, fuzzy green dots, white dust, and coin-size velvety circles. When consumed, mold can cause an allergic reaction and respiratory problems. In the right conditions, mold can produce "mycotoxins," which can make you sick, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

While no illnesses have been reported yet, the company urges consumers who have purchased the affected products to destroy them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you have any questions about this recall, contact the company at info@authentikfudge.com.
